Pvt. Dr. Dayananda Bajracharya (2002-2070) was a famous Nepali scientist and writer. He is also known as the first botanist of Nepal. Bajracharya, who became the Vice-Chancellor of the Nepal Academy of Science and Technology (NAST), had taught at Tribhuvan University for more than three decades. For a long time, Bajracharya was the Head of the Department of Botany at Tribhuvan University. He has published a number of books including A Kanti Salai, Scientist Goreto, Journey of Consciousness.



Study and teaching

Dayananda's grandfather was the founder of Guheyeshwari Medical Hall, the first Ayurveda hospital in Nepal. Born in Marutol, a slum in Kathmandu, Bajracharya studied at the local Shanti Kunj School till the age of ten. Bajracharya, who was enrolled in class nine at the same time after studying in class five and six in the school, passed the SLC at the age of 12. After enrolling in the Humanities Campus for a short period, Bajracharya's studies took a turn for the worse and he was admitted to the Public Science Campus (now Askal) in Lanchaur. Even after completing ISC in a special category, it was the family's wish to become a doctor by studying medicine. After enrolling in the Trichandra College at Ghantaghar for his B.Sc. The decision was taken after getting the opportunity to study at Gorakhpur University on the post-graduate (MA) scholarship. In 1966, he won first place in the first class examination of the Bachelor of Botany. While studying in Germany, Bajracharya had the opportunity to study with world-class facilities, along with dozens of other Nobel Prize-winning professors. A graduate of the University of Freiburg, Germany, Bajracharya has specialized in plant physiology and cytogenetics. In the meantime, he has traveled to more than 40 countries around the world. During the study, Bajracharya associated with about three dozen (31) Nobel Prize-winning scientists. Bajracharya, who has been teaching at Tribhuvan University for 41 years, became a professor at the age of 31. He is one of the youngest professors in the history of the university. He was of the view that National Science Day should be celebrated in Nepal.


Publications

Nine books have been published, including "A Stick in the Dark," "Scientific Goretoma" and "Journey of Consciousness". He has conducted scientific research on a wide range of topics, and has published research articles in dozens of national and international journals. So far, Bajracharya has published more than 40 research reports in botany in national and international journals. The reports have been published in reputed publications in Nepal, India, France, Israel, Japan, Germany, Malaysia, UK and USA. Another aspect of the achievement is that the findings of these researches are collected in annual reviews of Europe and America, university level textbooks and even encyclopedias. For a long time, his articles on science were being published in Nepali. He was reading. He was writing. They were learning. They were teaching. Hardly anyone has the ability to write the complex and difficult subject of science and technology in a language that can be understood by the mother. Irreparable damage in the field of Nepali science and literature! Writer-scientist Dayananda Bajracharya passed away at the age of 69 in Kathmandu on Monday.


Honors and medals

Also on the list of honors and medals is Dr. Dayananda Bajracharya has equally interesting facts. Mahendra Vidya Bhushan II of 1967, Mahendra Vidya Bhushan I of the same year, and the famous Gorkha Dakshin Bahu in 1999 have received dozens of testimonials and honors for their contribution in the field of science and technology. There is a long list of honors and awards received in the last phase.


Nepal Academy of Science and Technology

In 1998, Bajracharya himself was appointed Vice-Chancellor of the Foundation. The establishment did not even have its own permanent building structure for sixteen years of its establishment. Once upon a time, Vaneshwar and Anamnagar became a science and technology academy as a constitutional organ. From the hands of the staff, the establishment reached the easy access of the people in the field of science. Within three months of taking over the leadership, the government has sanctioned 80 ropanis of land in Hattiwan, the current building of the foundation. Eventually, under his leadership, the academy was able to operate from a state-of-the-art facility of science and technology. Bajracharya was the Vice Chancellor of Nepal Academy of Science and Technology from 1998 to 2006. He also served as Rector of Trivandrum and Dean of the Faculty of Science.


Perception

Science is the common heritage of the human race.  The search for truth is the main goal of science. Science and technology are the cornerstone of sustainable development and also the best hope for human future. "Development will not pick up speed unless we understand the importance," he said.


Death

Bajracharya, who was born in Kathmandu in the year 2002, passed away at the Om Hospital in Kathmandu on November 9, 2010. Bajracharya's eyes have been removed by doctors at the Tilganga Eye Hospital due to donations.
